Matt lay awake in the quiet dark of his room, feeling conflicted. The weekend had been perfect—except for their last ten minutes together. Her entire demeanor toward him had changed. He was content with slowing down, escaping to Walmart so they could both cool off. But suddenly she seemed as if she hadn’t wanted to be around him at all. He replayed the night, trying to figure out if he’d come on too strong. The last thing he wanted to do was make her feel pressured to do something she wasn’t ready for. He was a jerk.

Somehow, he had to figure out a way to apologize to her. He’d back off, play it cool at Elli’s in the morning. Give her the space she needed. He was a gentleman, not some hormone-riddled teenage boy. He could keep his hands off her—for a little while, anyway.

Around her, he felt as if he was floating on some damn good weed. Disembodied, almost. He couldn’t get his thoughts straight. It was like his brain had gone on vacation, something else taking over. Not his heart—though he definitely knew he was going to fall in love with her. No, it was something more.

She was the one.

He knew that the way he knew his name. It was a simple fact. Kind of scary, yes, because they were still so new. But it was also kind of exhilarating, like finding something he’d never even known he needed. Wanted, yes. He also belonged to her. Whatever happened next, his soul was hers. Until Rowan, he hadn’t even believed in soulmates.

This was the real deal, though.

It was like knowing the future and being unable to change it, nor could he tell anyone else. He just had to be patient and let it unfold, let things take their own course. That, he mused with a smile, was going to be the real challenge. Especially when he wanted to shout it to the world.
